Ernst Gotthold Struve (1679 – 1759) was the son of Georg Adam Struve and Susanna Berlich and thus the brother of the Three Loeck Sisters direct ancestor Friedrich Gottlieb Struve. He is not to be confused with his son of the same name (1714 – 1743). Both father and son were medical doctors which only adds to the confusion. And even more confusing the father outlived the son by sixteen years. Ernst senior married Dorothea Elisabeth Berchelmann (?-1758), the daughter of Koenraad Lodewijk Berchelmann. He died at Prenzlau.
The children of Ernst Gotthold and Dorothea Elisabeth (Berchelmann) Struve were:
- Ernst Gotthold Struve (1714 – 1743)
- Karl Dietloff Struve (1711 – 1770)
- Friedrich Christian Struve
- Benjamin August Struve > Christian August Struve
- Christian Adolph Struve (1723-1785)
We know little about the life of Ernst Gotthold, Snr. other than the children he had and the medical books he published, some of which are shown below. He was a student at Halle (Saale), from where he obtained his doctorate on August 15, 1702. He practiced as both an urban and rural physician in the Uckermark and Stolp districts in Prenzlau. He was appointed an Adjunct of the Collegium Medicum in Berlin and he was a member of the Leopoldina ( the German National Academy of Sciences). In general, the place of publication of EGS Snr. is at Kiel whereas for his son it is usually Jena or Halle.
