Johann August Struve (1637 – 1704)

Another child of Barthold and Ann Margaretha (Brunner) Struve’s was Johann August Struve (* 14 September 1637 at Magdeburg). Among his siblings were:

On 12th April 1670 he married Agnes Barbara Flüwerk (* 22 Sept 1652 at Hötensleben + 31 Mar 1688 at Magdeburg). Johann August died on 24th January 1704 at Magdeburg. Agnes Barbara was the daughter of Gottfried Flüwerck. They had at least three sons:

  1. August Barthold Struve (1672 – 1688)
  2. Johann Julius Struve (1674-1752)
  3. Gebhard Adam Struve

And one daughter Sophia Katharina / Catherine who married Georg Matthias Hanse.

Johann August supervised the public examination of his nephew Georg Adam Struve under the title: Georgii Adami Struvii, D.I.U. Prof. Publ. Exercitationem Feudalem Decimam Quintam De Amissione Feudi, Sub Eiusdem Praesiio Iterum publicae disquisitioni exponit … Johannes Augustus Struve. Ad d. XII. Iunii, Anno M.DC.LIIX. H.L.Q.C.

Johann August was a lawyer who held a high office in the Cathedral chapter of Magdeburg, and at the Collegiate church of St. Nicolai Syndicus.

He initially studied at the Hessian High School, and afterwards he went to the university of Jena where he self-published an academic dissertation in 1658: Specimen Iuridicum De Banno Seculari & Ecclesiastico … which included a dedication to Johann Krull (below right). Johann being his brother in law.

Johann Krull named in dedication

Other titles of a legal nature that Johann August published included: Disputatio Sexta In qua continentur Reso …. along with Christopher Philipp Richter. Georgii Adami Struvii, D.I.U. Prof. Publ. He held various appointments at the royal court at Magdeburg and was secretary to the city council of Regensburg, and finally in 1681 the Magdeburg Cathedral Capital Syndicus.

As such, his impact locally must have been quite large given the number of funeral sermons that were published on his death which occurred on 24th January 1704 at the age of sixty-seven. Some of the title pages of these are shown below. One in particular Letzte Pflicht welche Dem Hoch-Edlen und Hochgelahrten Herrn Hr. Johann August Struven Hochverordneten … had contributions by his son Johann Julius and Gebhard Adam Struve.

Other titles included: Lessus Quem Viro Nobilissimo atque Consultissimo Domino Johanne Augusto Struvio ….

NOTE: Canon Hanse who married Johann August’s daughter Sophia Catharine

In 1688 Agnes Barbara the wife of Johann August Struve died and a funeral book was published with the title: Geistliche Hertz-Stärckung Wieder die Hiobs-Posten und andere schwere Fälle Die im Leben Leiden und Sterben zu sich ziehende Güte Gottes : Aus dem Kern-Sprüchlein Davids Psalm. LXIII, v. 4. … Bey … Leich-Bestattung Der … Frauen Agnesen Barbaren Struven …  which tells us that Agnes Barbara died on 12th April of the year 1688 year and was placed in her “resting room” (grave). When she was buried the body of her third son, Gottfried Christian Struve, was buried alongside her. Other members of the Struve family listed are Johann August (her husband), Sophia Catherine Struve, the wife of Georg Matthias Hans, Johann Julian and Gebhard Adam Struve.

Johann August and Barbara Agnes (Flüwerk) Struve’s daughter, Sophia Katharina, married Georg Matthias Hanse. Georg who was a canon of the church at Magdeburg. A book of poems was published on the occasion of the marriage:

In 1688 August Barthold Struve the son of Johann August and Barbara Agnes died at the age of 16 and a funeral book was published under the title: Dreyerley Rosen-Art So auff Veranlassung des mit dreyen Rosen geschmückten Struvischen Wapens Bey Beerdigung Des … Jünglinges Augusti Bartholdi Struven Eines Hochwürdigen Dom-Capituls des Hohen Stiffts zu Magdeburg wohlbestalten Syndici, Des … Johannis Augusti Struven ICti … Aeltesten Hertzallerliebsten Sohns Welcher … den 19. The fact that mother and son died within weeks of each other suggests that perhaps a plague of sorts was moving across the afrea.

2. GEBHARD ADAM STRUVE

The second son of Johan August and Agnes Barbara (Fluwek) Struve and brother of Johann Julius, was Gebhard Adam who was appointed a councilor and commissioner at Magdeburg on January 25, 1712. His personal fortune guaranteed him a position in the government (see Die Behördenorganisation und die allgemeine Staatsverwaltung … , Volume 1).

Soon after Friedrich Wilhelm I’s accession to the throne, he was advised to increase the taxable income from the city of Magdeburg from15,000 thalers to 50,000. Since the previous principal recipient of the duchy, Johann Ludwig Strautt, could not raise this amount, he resigned from the office. In his place, he proposed Gebhard Adam Struve, who, in addition to his own fortune, also that of his father-in-law, the war councilor Steinheuser, as a guarantee, offered a total of 30,000 thalers as his successor. The king had few objections so he made the Magdeburg clerk’s office liable for any failures, and he made Struve the chief recipient of all and every other ordinary and extra ordinary taxes that are written out from time to time. Struve was considered dutiful and that he would  handle the income honestly and faithfully, with everything being correctly calculated and accounted for. He was instructed that at the appropriate time, he was to calculate everything correctly, as previously announced, and not to pay out any of it and dispose of it without orders or assignments, and not to leave any residues even without the utmost necessity, and to keep the state of the fund entrusted to him hidden and none but those who may know something should he shoe the accounts ”) in such a way that they are accepted and justified at the right and usual time of each year Magdeburg’s chief taker.
